A lot of business leaders can feel like they’re permanently in survival mode. You’re running from one thing to the next, jumping from meeting to meeting, answering calls, emails, texts – and this is not exclusive to the office anymore. We take this frenzy home with us and then juggle it with kids and family. Some liken this to triage – you do what you can to prevent priorities from bleeding out. Nothing more, nothing less.
Here’s the thing though – you cannot thrive in survival mode!
It sounds weird to say, but your schedule is not entirely in your control. You’ll always have meetings, lunches and kids’ activities. However, there is something you can do in new year 2019 to make your life feel like survival and more like thriving. Find a sanctuary.
A sanctuary means something a little different for everyone. Some people it’s mowing their lawn – the buzz of the blades over the grass takes their mind of the craziness and puts them in a spot of peace. Others, it’s working out, meditating, reading – the list goes on and on. For me, it’s date nights with my wife, Maria. Having that time to really look at my spouse and say, “Hey, how are you doing? How are we doing? Are we on the same page?” recalibrates my whole world and gives me the balance I need.
My hope for you all in the new year is that you find and cherish your sanctuary. It’ll do wonders.
Happy New Year!
