As we embark on a new football season, I recently had the privilege of speaking to elementary and middle school students and their coaches. It was a poignant moment because also in attendance were the Lonvick and Gadomski families – two families who lost children way too young in life.
Before I spoke, Becky Gadomski gave a beautiful tribute to her daughter, Caitrin. Her speech, and the memories that flooded my brain as a result, left me fumbling my words as I tried to motivate and educate this young group of kids around purpose.
I was in a similar position ten years ago, except instead of just speaking, I was coaching a youth football team at the time. While not necessarily championship-caliber, the other coaches and I were tasked with teaching these kids more than just sport.
Yes, we had high expectations, but our main focus was to honor Caitrin Gadomski and her family while instilling character and trust and teaching these kids about playing for something bigger than themselves. “To appreciate the opportunity to compete,” as the rock says, since not only Caitrin, but countless children in the community and across the globe are not as fortunate to have that opportunity. It was a tall task, but that group of boys, even in their youth, exemplified high character and a commitment to serving their community through purpose.
As I reflect on the 10th anniversary of Caitrin’s rock, and the recent passing of high school senior #77, Erik Lonvick, I’m left with so many thoughts. But in a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, I’m grateful to have Caitrin’s rock as a place to center me and bring to life what is important. Her tribute remains a constant reminder of what truly matters for not just me, but so many others: purpose and community. Though the rock began as a way to honor a 6-year-old girl, it’s become a representation of our community and a place to remember others in it who have passed, such as Erik Lonvick and former Golden Eagles football coaches, Coach Mica and Coach Campanella.
Through this rock, we remember those we’ve lost who contributed to our community. We stand on their shoulders, building upon their legacy and striving to continue creating a community grounded in purpose and service for others.
